Description

This church was built between 1736-42 and is the Catholic church in Oberammergau. It is here where we went to mess at 5:00PM on Christmas Eve, followed by a visit to the old cemetery across the river Ammer below Kofel (the mountain visible in the left swathed in snow flurries). Here everybody lighted candles at the gravesites of their loved ones in a little glass enclosure in 2-feet of snow and said a silent prayer. This was followed by Christmas Evening supper by candle light and the giving of the presents. This was exiting for the kids. Then toward midnight it was time for the Midnight Mess. My nephew Robert sings in the choir of Sankt Peter und Paul in Oberammergau, and my cousin Gundi sings in the choir at Kloster Ettal, a couple of miles away. It was a busy day and I enjoyed going to church and being exposed to the old costums and I miss not being there this year. This picture was taken on 23 December 2005. I wish everyone at renderosity a very Happy New Year. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my uploads and a special 'Thank You' to those that may have added some of them to their favorites, Sig..

@Andrea and Alan. Happy New Year to you both. I am glad that you enjoy my uploads from my travels. The desire to travel started early for me, when I was a little kid. Early, when the weather in Germany was too miserable to go outside and play (we had no radio or TV) I dug out the old atlas and looked at faraway places. This coupled with a several books I received shortly after I learned to read, one about an expedition into the interior of Borneo, another about an expedition to Outer Mongololia, and a photo album I had traded for some other item about the former German colonies with plenty of color pictures and text of East Africa, Togo, Kamerun, Southwest Africa (now Namibia), Bismarck Archipelago (part of it in the Solomons and on New Guinea) and some South Pacific Islands Germany had laid claim to, all inspired me. Last but not least, standing in front of Travel Agencies and seeing big posters of the Canadian Pacific train meandering through the Canadian Rockies, or seeing a poster of an Australian sunset at Alice Springs did the trick. Once I left I Germany never looked back. I started to take pictures in the 60s never dreaming that I would post those pictures on the internet and share with others. I started posting pictures on renderosity to keep myself busy in my retirement. I am glad you enjoy these pictures and I will do my best to keep you interested and take you to other parts of the world, LOL. Seriously, many people on renderosity think that I have travelled extensively, and I have, but there are others that have travelled much more. What drives me is to see the places I have not yet seen, Sig.. (Whoa, I think in went overboard with this reply)
