Description

This church was built between 1736-42 and is the Catholic church in Oberammergau. It is here where we went to mess at 5:00PM on Christmas Eve, followed by a visit to the old cemetery across the river Ammer below Kofel (the mountain visible in the left swathed in snow flurries). Here everybody lighted candles at the gravesites of their loved ones in a little glass enclosure in 2-feet of snow and said a silent prayer. This was followed by Christmas Evening supper by candle light and the giving of the presents. This was exiting for the kids. Then toward midnight it was time for the Midnight Mess. My nephew Robert sings in the choir of Sankt Peter und Paul in Oberammergau, and my cousin Gundi sings in the choir at Kloster Ettal, a couple of miles away. It was a busy day and I enjoyed going to church and being exposed to the old costums and I miss not being there this year. This picture was taken on 23 December 2005.
