A DEER STORY
Last October we went into the Smoky Mountains for a few days seeking the annual fireworks display of the nature's autumn colors. That we found, but there were also so many other delightful surprises along the way.
One gem happened as twilight approached at the end of an absolutely amazing day spent in Cade's Cove. As my truck took one of the many turns on the tiny one-way lane, we came upon a herd of deer grazing out in a field, not too far from the road.
Of course I had to get out and sneak up as close as I dared. But knowing how skittish deer are, I kept a low profile not wanting to spook them away.
After I took all the shots I could and not knowing what else to do, I looked to Julia who was traveling with me but standing back next to my truck. She motioned for me to get closer. After all, I had my shots already - what was there to lose?
So I slowly crept out in the field while remaining seated. Much to my surprise, the deer completely ignored me! So after snappin' a few more, I continued to creep slowly but steadily directly towards them.
I felt surely by now they had to notice I was there.
Then suddenly the Buck of the herd raised his head looking directly at me, and began to slowly walk towards me. I expected them all to run off at any second, or maybe even get attacked, but he just stood there and gave me a good looking over. I don't know if this had anything to do with it or not, but in my mind I did my best to project nothing but peaceful, positive thoughts and intentions.
While the Buck was checking me out, the Does had noticed me too, but they weren't quite as calm as the Buck. In fact, they looked like they were ready to fly! I thought this was it.
And then again to my surprise, the Buck turned around and resumed grazing, followed by the more nervous Does. I was absolutely stunned because I was already closer than I had ever dreamed possible! So I kept moving in, eventually being only a few yards away! It felt like a dream.
The Does were keeping an eye on me more so than the Buck was. And then finally the Does had had enough. They tore off running looking back as they ran expecting to see the Buck leaving as well. But he held his ground just staring them down to a complete halt. They stopped, and reluctantly returned, although obviously still uncomfortable with my presence.
The Buck then went over to greet them and kissed several of them (right on the mouth) and licked their ears as if saying, "Don't worry - everything's OK". And of course it was. That's when I took this picture.
A sweet, tender moment to witness, and so close too! But it was time for me to go. I had experienced an encounter I thought I'd never see, and I felt extremely grateful.
The deer were wild deer, but living in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park they've never encountered those bastards who shoot for entertainment, but without using cameras. I hope they never do experience them.
I'll post a few more from that magical meeting, and Julia has some interesting shots she'll post in her gallery of me while out in the field among the herd. If I didn't have her shots as proof, I might even begin to doubt it myself!
Thanks much and Happy New Year!

Wow, what a story!! I was on an island off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, and had the same kind of experience with some birds, the blue footed boobies (really!) They don't see many people and I was able to get within about 5 feet!! This is a great shot!!
