Description

A Closer view of this Metal chain Sculpture. Trafford Park Manchester. Only yards from Old Trafford Football Ground (Manchester United FC) The "Park" built on the south side of the Manchester Ship Canal occupying 3,000 acres was the first planned built Industrial estate in the world and is still the largest in Europe. It was an important supplier of materials during the First and Second World Wars, and produced the Rolls Royce Merlin engines used to power both the Spitfire and the Lancaster. At its peak in 1945 an estimated 75,000 were employed at the park. Over the years many changes took place and in the 60's employment began to decline. However there has been a massive regeneration programme since the 80's and today Trafford park still employs 35,000 people.

Trafford Park must be an interesting place. Thanks for your historic information, this is allways helpful. We have the same problem here. In Berlin exist great areas, which were smashed in the days of WW II and deserted later, maybe the were situated in the deadzone between east and west, till today. It is a long and painful process to bring them back to a new life. 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall we are in the middle of the process, not at its end.
