Compassion To know the difference between pity and compassion is to tread the thin line between alienation and involvement. Pity stands aloof, removed, indifferent, even hostile. Compassion assimilates the pain and suffering, the fear, anger, or desperation of others. But true compassion has a detachment beyond indifference, an impartiality that slices through the clutter to act, not in self interest or in line with ingrained prejudices, but in selfless consideration and understanding of the needs of others.
