Description

We often wonder what Nemaeans see, when they gaze upon the harsh grandeur of their interstellar realm. That they occupy and exploit worlds normally hostile to the human form is simply a part of what recognize of them. Nemaeans themselves say that this is the most boring aspect of their stellar-national character. Some, among us, may call them brave. Others are apt to use more colorful, and less complimentary terms. But a single fact remains. Nemaea has embraced the chaotic forces of evolution, and in so doing, has rendered itself into a community that is not wholly human. That they find interest in worlds such as Arov—so close to the high energy emissions of the Barens Nebula—is expected; but what continues to haunt me is why we take so few risks in comparison to them. They are human (though not in the ways that we are...not any more, at least) and yet they are so much more resilient than we. They say that they are frail and as prone to human weakness as 'anyone else' and yet, their star-spanning society is incredibly cohesive, and it continues to expand into territories our own ships assiduously avoid. What gives them this drive and this ability: what have they kept that we have abandoned? What have they gained? --Joshua Lim/Unpublished Journals **** Ah, my first post of 2009. Hopefully everyone's new year is off to a great start, and from the looks of things, Nemaea is developing in a couple of interesting directions to be revealed as the year progresses. As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting, and...well...in the upcoming days, I hope to catch up on all that I've been missing.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the new year brings to your universe, my friend! The circle turns, and turns again, and stories are built one upon another. I shall await your next tale, O Scheherazade. :)

an enticing appetizer of things to come, filled with your usual hints & glimpses. Even parentheticals like "...not any more, at least" are filled with suggestion of what was & came to be, etc. And ending in question marks is a great way of prepping us for what's to come. (Hey, I'm still feeling the vibes of your recent reflections on E. European haunts!) Then your visual...it's inviting not only for the light-in-dark of true extra-terrestial shots, but for the mystery of an orb whose light side is hidden from us, whose edge-textures seem wholly alive, and because you allow lens-flare into the shot (you haven't been traveling in other galaxies, have you??? is that where you've been??? and with a camera??? can you get me a black hole next time you go, I hear they're cheap—if you get them from the right vendor...) (lotta charlatans in outer space!) In fact, the center of the planet is either a big lens, a big eye, or just another world within a world. Maybe a space station?...You never go for the easy or comfortable, Chip, you always fill your work with depth & mysteries. So good to have you back! And if you can't catch up, I for one am fine: Reading & seeing you again is enough reward for me!

Welcome back, Chip; happy New Year! Some good astrophysics here, with the system roasted by a nearby nebula...we don't think much about the long-range effects of novae, etc....who knows how many civilizations get wiped out by 'em?? Good work!

Happy New Year my friend. A spectacular image with vibrant colour and lighting. An apt scene for such a daring society as the Nemaeans. I hope we'll hear more of them, it is interesting to explore how human evolution might track in the ages ahead. They seem rugged and resilient like the gas giant that has persevered for eons under the violent radiation of the nearby stellar nursery. The giant seems nearly encompassed by an aurora, perhaps created by the giant's intense magnetic field which in turn shields the other smaller worlds from the worst effects of the nebula. Very elegant.

Wow, I don't know how I missed out when you posted this, it's got to be your most visually arresting space scene, and that's truly saying something! As for the story, a very enticing opening chapter, I can't wait to hear more of his ruminations, and where it will lead him. To him I'd probably only suggest: "they have kept that child-like wonder and curiosity, mixed with a profoundly spiritual imagination that only those who are unafraid to look chaos in the eyes are willing to see." How's that for deep and meaningless?
