Description

This is Elizabeth Castle when the tide is out. During these times you are able to walk across the causeway to the castle. When the tide is high you need to get a Duwk, which is an amphibious vehicle which leaves the beach at intervals throughout the day. Built on an islet in St Aubin's Bay, Elizabeth Castle has defended Jersey from the French for more than 300 years. Elizabeth Castle was built in 1590 and was once the home of Jersey's Tudor Governor Sir Walter Raleigh. The area to the lower right of the picture is the bathing pool which is filled by the rising tide and when the tide goes out, you can still have a swim. The green area's on the sand is sea lettuce which can be a problem here in the summer. If you are interested in where I live then please view www.jersey.com Thank you for your views and comments Susan

I didn't know the French were still needing to be defended against! Good to know there are defenses in place... this is lovely, and I'll bet at high tide it's even lovelier! Wonder what's on the other side of the channel to defend the French?... Jersey looks lovely, I used to have a friend who lives there. One of these days I must get over and check it out!

I really am intrigued by where this has been built. And to think it has withstood the ravages of time and weather... Fabulous shot!

Elizabeth Castle is right in town and very near the harbour in St Helier. It is cut off by the tide twice a day. I live a 5 min walk from this area. I am pleased you like it and will look for a photo with the tide high. Thanks for your continued support.
