Description
This is the northern edge of Lake Itasca, located in north central Minnesota. Lake Itasca has several small streams and creeks draining into it that bring in slightly more water than the lake can absorb. So at this northern (yes Northern) end, some excess water spills over these rocks.
That slight spillage marks the beginning of the mighty Mississippi River.
At this point of river origin the water barely covered my ankles, and was only a few feet across. Quite cold too! But it is here that the long journey to the Gulf of Mexico begins via St. Paul Minnesota; St. Louis, Missouri; Memphis, Tennessee; Natchez, Mississippi; New Orleans, Louisiana; and countless other small towns and cities along the river's meandering path.
Of course now this location is covered knee deep in ice and snow, but this is how it looks in October.

I don't think any amount of rocks can hold back the mighty Mississippi River. And that is as it should be ya know? From such a humble beginning to a raging main artery of transportation. Who would of ever thought... If nothing else this picture should serve as a reminder that "greatness" is in the eye of the beholder.
