Part fun, part work: I created this as a sample background for a client's Web application (the final draft will include their logo). I created this by duplicating spheres and rods and placing them slightly off center of each other to create an interesting pattern. I then placed everything (including the camera) inside a giant cylinder, which provides the curved, reflected light in the background. This particular render was definitely overkill for my requirements. I did it at 2000 wide with Radiosity set at Better. On a quad-core machine, it took more than 10 hours to render (on my old single core machine, it will probably take about 25-30). Needless to say, I did this as a test render to gauge the speed, rather than for production purposes. The basic Raytracing-Better setting is more than adequate, and it only takes less than 10 minutes. All in all, I like the sci-fi feeling to the image, and it was a lot of fun to just make something (mostly) for the fun of it. ---------------- Details: All geometry created in Strata 3D CX: post work in Photoshop (adding signature and framing element). The final version will require that I import a vector of the logo and extrude it to make it 3D.
