Syn had watched the commotion with faint interest, not imaging that he would be called to take part, but he found the thought amusing… and the prize appealing. Setting down his goblet of wine, he looked to Rynard, who grinned wickedly back at him. “This should be interesting!” the Filkharian said with good humor. Few men would ever dare to jest with a Dragon Lord. But Syn had learned that his companion dared to do much that other men wouldn’t… After all, he dared to call him friend! Rising from his chair as an answer to Roland, Syn took up his great sword casually, and strolled toward the center of the court yard. The crowd of warriors quickly fell back to form a large open circle, as Blade recovered her composure and hefted her own great sword. “Try not to kill her,” Roland asked with sincerity as he passed Syn. But the Melnibonean gave no sign that he would, or that he even heard the request. “I’ve never had the pleasure of defeating a Dragon Lord before,” Blade taunted, as they circled each other, each taking the measure of the other’s movements. She feigned a few thrusts, trying to lure him into striking first, but Syn did not respond. Then she lunged forward, and their blades clashed… The duel had begun in earnest! Both warriors fought at a fevered pitch, their blades only blurs to the spectators, and it seemed that it could only end in blood, but then Blade took a misstep and tumbled backward. Scrambling to reclaim her grip on her sword, she turned to rise, but found Syn’s blade at her throat. “I would prefer my prize alive,” he taunted, his voice cold and humorless.
