Description

I thought I would share how I've been able to use LightWave in my work (with an art glass sculptor). I posted this in the Mixed Media Gallery because I used a few programs to get the finished piece done. This glass "vase" sculpture is 1.70 meters tall, and is 1.00 meter in diameter. It is constructed with individual glass rings, polished on the inside and hand chipped on the outer surface. The rings are then laminated together with an interlayer of gold leaf and fixed to a cast bronze base. Lights are placed in the inside to illuminate the piece. The entire process starts with a hand drawn concept sketch, which I scan in and use as a background template for modeling it in LightWave. The vase shape took about half an hour to model, and the base took a little more than an hour. Rendering time was less than seven minutes for each view. The quick renders get sent back to the client for evaluation and approval. LW also allowed me to conceptually evaluate the lighting for the piece. Once approved, I extracted the information from each ring in LW and used a CAD program to generate a cut list for the glass. This same information also allows me to take the data into a spreadsheet and make basic weight calculations and do some pseudo-engineering. The 3D images also helped with the wax mould used in the bronze casting process for the base. The final bit is a quick photo just before it got packed and shipped. Each finished piece weighed in at about 320 kgs. (approximately 700 lbs). If you'd like to go see the actual piece, I'm afraid you'll have to go off to Cairo. (Bloody thing gets there before I do.) Hope you like it. :o)
