Description
This is for Nikolay--aka nikolais--one of the truly stunning artists on the site. And yes Nikolay, that's my photo! It's from 1979, developed in a darkroom--I just had to give you a photograph (gulp, gulp!) (Please see full-size!) How do I describe Nikolay's work? Intense. Magical. Personal. Indelible. He understands the power of one: A wall, a tree, a road, anything. And he'll combine them into a symphony! Then he'll do bustling landscapes & stunning silhouettes, opulent images & stark dreams; his colors will jump off the page while his sepias are so fine you'll forget you're not looking at color...And when he combines images, he can make a branch look like the ghosts of previous lives, or a wall reveal the secrets of the ages... Personally? He's filled with great passion & deep fire, and he's been a wonderful friend! So go to his gallery (if you haven't been) & sit with his work & soak in his amazing vision. He's here. It's been an honor having you right down the block, my friend, and your friendship & support has meant the world...

It's very clever the way you've made it look like a scroll. Ilove the final one, would be great to do another transformation using silk painta.

Breathtakingly beautiful!! Each one stands alone, but the last one speaks to me. Soft, dreamy, makes me want to reach out and touch it. And your dedi is wonderful, I've seen Nikolay's work and can only nod and agree with all you've said!!

Wonderful dedi to a fine photographic artist. From a darkroom in 1979 to Photoshop today: the tools change, the artistic vision remains, Mark!

Mark this is such a wonderful and thoughtful dedi to your friend. On top of that your words of praise are equally beautiful and I know he will be grateful. This series transforms so well and the final image reminds me so much of a glass box I got for my parents in Indonesia. Inside this thing glass display was a delicate little city and scene that are so beautiful and delicate, much like your work here.

Now that is truly a vision! I love them all. The original is so peaceful and wide open. THEN - there is the stunning treatment of the middle one!! Of course, if that is not enough it's as if you'd pulled the shade down on the window but the brilliance of the image penetrates the shade and shines right through. No hiding this light! Does your creativity have no bounds?? Hugs to you.

Fantastic transforming and interpretation, Mark. Your work is really creative and original. This 3 step transformation is amazing. A beautiful landscape as the point of origin. The next step, brings it into aurora borealis. And the third step, takes it back to basic..mother nature in the raw. Brilliant abstraction.+5

This is amazing work Mark, so many wonderful visions from one photograph, an interesting and vibrant dedi. I also think you should write books, you have such a gift for writing prose, I love the way you play with words finding just the right words to fit every time, it is a joy to read. Hugs Jane xx

Here's what I see . . . the first is the natural world we witness each day. In this case it's a lovely tranquil scene which may have had a special significance in your life. The second expresses the spiritual side of nature, with its ebb and flow of energy and transformation. The third is the world seen from a more secluded space, maybe it's seen through a window that is looking into this same part of the world. Maybe the artist is staying cozy inside reflecting on the basic forms like the season and the snow and even the appearance of the window itself. It's like this image is in harmony telescoping from the outside to the inner world--or maybe reaching out to another realm--and then back again. It's a lovely dedication to your friend and fellow artist and to the act of creating art.
