Description

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil The proverb “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” is most often associated with an image of three monkeys, sometimes referred to as The Three Wise Monkeys, each one are shown respectively covering their eyes, their ears, and their mouth. It is interesting to note that the reason monkeys are used in the theme is probably due more to an ancient play words more than the apparent wisdom of the monkeys portrayed. In modern (Western) usage the adage is often used to describe someone who ignores their wrongdoing or the consequences of their actions. It is also often used to describe someone who does not want to become involved in a (usually controversial) situation. For example, it was sometime used by Europeans to describe the United States in their semi-isolationist stance in the late 30’s and early 40’s before their entry in the Second World War. However in a more historical (Japanese and Chinese) understanding, it was simply a reminder not to be snoopy, nosy and gossipy. In Japan some considered the proverb akin to a Golden Rule. A Buddhist interpretation may be that if we do not hear, see or talk evil, we shall be spared evil. In this respect it is similar (in an inverse manor) to the English proverb “Speak of the Devil” and if someone does… the devil appears. The adage represented by three monkeys is of Japanese origin and likely became popular because of 17th century carving over a door of the famous Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō. In Japan this is referred to as sanzaru – literally translating to “three monkys”. The saying is "mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru" or "don't see, don't hear, don't speak". It is with the “zaru” portion of this where the Monkeys probably came into the picture. In Japanese, zaru, which is an archaic negative verb conjugation, is the same as zaru, the vocalized suffix for saru, meaning monkey. The proverb, however, has roots much older the 17th century Japanese usage and likely came from China in the 8th Century. In the Analects of Confucius there is a similar phase: "Look not at what is contrary to propriety; listen not to what is contrary to propriety; speak not what is contrary to propriety; make no movement which is contrary to propriety". It is interesting to note in some representations show four monkeys not three and the last part of the adage then becomes “and do no evil”. In this incarnation the last monkey is usually shown covering his crotch, groin or belly. -------- OK, OK, so I took a little artistic license with this one…. Well, I had no Monkeys in my runtime…. so hopefully you will be happy my three characters: Candy, Singlee, and Sinja. … and Monkeys might not look right in corsets and fishnets (just ask M3 about that!) ~wink~ ‘sides, Roxy (brewgirlca) gave me strict instruction after my last bout with Mike 3 in a I’m Sexy too! She strongly requested I get back to doing historical girls… any girls, I think was the sentiment ~wink~ LOL. Not for her mind you. I think for the well being of the community! Roxy, I had this half done… and they are not exactly historical… but they are girls! Hope you like them. Rick

quote: "However in a more historical (Japanese and Chinese) understanding, it was simply a reminder not to be snoopy, nosy and gossipy. Would be a lesson well learned, and I include my self in needing this instruction, sometimes, lol. Wonderful image, I love the poses and expressions.

lol Very well done and great historical writeup about the sayings and the many variety of the carvings that have been introduced. European Balance of Power concept vs United States rejection of said - now that's an interesting topic and I find it very interesting that the saying here was used in Europe to describe the United States behaviour even while most in the United States considered European FP to be amoral (necessary compromises to maintain the Balance of Power concept). In fact the concept that states should behave as people do when interacting is a very American approach and one that Europe (and probably the rest of the world) found confusing and a bit naive. I think more people today demand a greater ethical behaviour from their nations in FP then in the past.

That is really great Rick! I burst out laughing as soon as I saw it, before I even had a chance to read it. I would love to know where you tap into this great store of historical wealth that you have; I am constantly fascinated by what you come up with and this is such a great explanation of this classic witicism.
