Description
This is the first photograph I've posted on Renderosity. I've taken tons of photos and have been tempted to post but have never done so. In any case, I've been fighting with Poser again and so in the meantime I thought why not?
I took this picture when I went on vacation last summer to Gatlinburg TN. On the way back, we drove through the Smokey Mountains. My husband was great about slowing down the car to allow me to take some photos. We stopped along the road because I saw a creek. I climbed down the embankment to get a picture. And the ground was covered with these magnificent butterflies. As luck would have it my camera batteries were dying so I only managed to get a few shots before it was toast. But what a cool opportunity. I've never seen anything like this before. The little butterflies were dancing on the sandy wet ground and I had to be careful not to step on them. They were so pretty!
I used a Canon digital camera to take this shot. I didn't crop the picture because I wanted to show as many of the butterflies as possible. I also liked the texture of the sandy beach with the little pebbles embedded in the soil.

They appear to be Pipevine Swallowtails (Battus philenor). The dancing behavior is from their natural behavior to get moisture and nutrients from and act referred to as "puddling." Puddling is when many butterflies are seen at one spot, such as a shallow puddle, mud, or animal poop. I can see from your photo, it must have been an amazing sight. I love the shot and glad you didn't crop it. Also, I'm happy you decided to post a photo. You have much to share and much to offer all of us with your photography and commets.

they are so beautiful. I love your Poser work but please post some fotos also. a butterfly similar in color to this one from S.America actually has a very toxic poison on it's wings so predators will leave them alone. we have this breed here but I seldom see them and they are always alone
