Description

This one is kinda hard to figure out. I took the foto last August in the Headwaters Forest and have been trying to do something with it. It's the root of a huge redwood tree, and is probably at least 20 feet high. There are all kinds of ferns and other plants growing out of it, along with a few tiny baby redwoods. I couldn't get far enough back for any kind of perspective without falling down a rather steep hill. So I just kept playing with it and finally said to myself, "enough's enough, just post the dang thing!!!" So I did!!

Makes me think, Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Say, that wouldn't be a bad title, "wood it"? Oh, stand back the puns are running. Great shot made all the better with your frank explanation of what and how :)

I see that you "Branched out" on this one, if you would like some pointers, just give me a "trunk call", I promise my "Bark is worst than my bite", together we can get to the "Root of the ploblem"...and that "leaves" us satisfied that the image is done :)

Your postwork makes it quite surreal, and there is definitely a citrus headed alien emerging and about to take flight top centre!

I thought it was a dragon, but if Andrea and Arthur say "alien," who am I to argue? This makes for a fabulous abstract. Nicely done!

(simple as one, two, tree...ok, enough puns...) Sometimes an artwork or photograph just won't allow us to call it 'finished': Sometimes it obstinately spills over the edges and defies boundaries. This is that kind of shot. It's vital and has much movement, and it's actually an abstract; and it feels like its bursting its seams. If I didn't know what it was, I might've thought it was several things besides. You could probably get several shots from that source, considering its visual confluence; and if you're doing postwork, you could make lots of paintings from it. (I can already think of 2 or 3 transformations that could come from it.) I like that you post images like this, because it's about what photographers contend with: It's about the incompleteness of some images, that no matter how hard you try, some images will always be unwieldy; and because it's a rich & twisty visual by itself, with a lot of unmanageable life. And besides, it's from a redwood, and for most of us that's legendary. I'm glad you posted it, even if you went through a lot to make it 'complete'. Here it is in all its tangled glory...
