Description

As we were leaving Dodge Island (Port of Miami), just having completed our mandatory drill, I watched this scene of Biscayne Bay from deck 14. The palm trees at the lower pictures are lining Macarthur Causeway, the island poking out at right is Palm Island and the the one in the center is San Marcus Island with some of the Miami skyline visible in the distance. Beautiful houses and boats, but the the thing that came to my mind is hurricanes. These islands appear to be man-made and barely above the waterline. What if there is a hurricane? What about hurricane damage, insurance etc? This picture was taken on 24 January 2009. Thank you for viewing and commenting and 'Thanks' to those that may have saved some of my uploads as favorites, Sig...

This is a great looking photo, and reminds me of home. I lived there for several years, and those homes do just fine in the hurricanes. Their not right on the ocean, and there's plenty of break water. But farther to the south there are a bunch of houses built on dock pillings in the middle of the bay, that are called "Stiltsville". Some of those haven't done so well in the storms, but they have one heck of a view.

You'd never see anything like that up here, simply because of the tides. The closer one is to the equator, the less the tides are an influence, but up here it's a huge consideration! We put in pilings for a dock, and then float the dock between the pilings with a piece of bent metal or a wooden enclosure that surrounds each piling. That way the dock can move freely up and down, but can't wander off by itself to play elsewhere. (I'm sure that's more than you ever wanted to know! LOL!) Beautiful image - it looks like you had a great time!

The whiteness and the bright sky make Southern Florida stand out as a place to live. It's a place to be when you feel cozy under a palm tree.

Most coastal islands are barrier islands and never meant to last forever. Some grow and shrink and change shape with each passing year. I have never understood how man can get angry or act surprised when the barrier island they live on is struck by natural disaster and they lose everything they have worked for. Knowing these places can never be stable, I look at a beautiful scene like this and also know that one day, I or one of my decendants, will be paying for disaster recovery and rebuilding - and no lesson will ever be learned. But good heavens! Look how very exciting and gorgeous it is! Great shot.:-)

Haven't been to Miami since a high school sponsored scuba diving trip in 1958. Great view from way up there on your cruise ship. And quite a panorama that you've captured. Looking good.

A beauty of a picture again, mate. Makes you wonder doesn't it? You quest for the 'best' house with the best view doesn't take into account hurricanes or indeed nature! They were probably built originally on old mangrove areas or the like.. But as you can see, they have all gone now. They would have held most hurricanes at bay. Man has to stick his meddling finger in.... Happens everywhere. Great picture, my friend. Where next I wonder? Rob.
