Description

The Forest of Bowland Actually this was taken just a couple of miles from where I took the barn images.Shows how the terrain changes so quick. Before anyone says its a forest but no trees..read on. Located east of Lancaster in the north west of England the area covers 312 square miles and stretches as far south as the famous landmark Pendle Hill. The area is dominated by a central upland core of deeply incised grit stone fells with summits above 450m and vast tracts of heather-covered peat moorland. It is said that Bronze Age settlers cleared trees from the fells and began cultivating the land. It was in the medieval period that the Royal hunting forests were established - the title ‘forest’ refers to hunting rights, and not to a large expanse of woodland, as we interpret it today,hence on a visit there are few trees to be seen. The Forest laws were revoked in 1507, as deer parks and smaller estates replaced the hunting forests. As well as disused quarries and lead mines there are lime kilns to be seen that were used to make mortar as well as lime to fertilize the fields. Although not far from the west coast of England this area is still considered to be part of the Pennine chain.

Having been born and raised in a place rich in enormous trees, I generally find non-treed land to be sorely lacking in interest and beauty. Your photograph has (at least temporarily) converted me. This is an absolutely gorgeous landscape, full of color and glorious light. A stunning landscape, and an inspiring image! Beautiful work.

This is not dissimilar to the moorland around goathland on the yorkshire moors... it is just barren landscape for miles and miles. Such a dramatic photo of raw nature. Excellent!
