Description

This was a pencil drawing. It was damaged in a flood... So I put it in PS and turned it into a 'photographic negative'. I added a moon. The original was a street in Chicago. (Ah well.) Now it's a night scene...

Mark this is simply brilliant and reading the story of how it came to be only makes it better. You've taken a obviously detailed drawing that was almost ruined and breathed new life into it. What a great idea and wonderful way to turn a negative into a positive.

What a great idea, to restore one artwork into another with modern technology, you are amazing Mark. Excellent work and restoration. Well I blinked, and then came back, and was amazed to see how many wonderful artworks of yours I have missed, I will have to keep coming back for more, and more often, so sorry for my very late comments. hugs Jane xx

I'm so glad you explained this. Of course, viewing it, it has that negative effect, but I can't honestly say I'd have thought it completely inverted to negative. And, THIS was a pencil sketch? Oh my! My eyes study the strength of the tree forms, the cars, the building forms...and I can't help thinking that this was initially one finely tuned, and strong, original sketch. But, the inversion has given it a strength in its own right. I keep visually making my way to the just barely less than vertical line that forms the foundational right of the whole comp...and then meandering to the top (because to me, it seems appropriate somehow that an image damaged by flooding ended up being beautifully steeped in blues, and its top perfectly resembling an inlet, a cove, or a bay). I also really like the graininess on the bottom left, that I'm assuming may have been the water damage. How fun that with this negative, even that turned out to be such a positive! :)

When I saw this, I thought, "Oh! Look at you with the photography and the fancy postwork! You go!" :) And to find this started life as a drawing? Amazing. I like this very much. The contrast between the dark, dark sky and the lighter street scene is quite pleasing, and the contrast between the airy, leafy trees and the solid buildings makes me think of spring. Excellent work!

Talk about mysterious - and I too sucked into the photo-reality. Well done Mark; nothing to add that hasn't already been said.

What is it they say?? Necessity is the mother of invention? Well... it worked! You did not want a little water damage to stop you. Not only did you "fix it" but you created a Masterpiece! The negative look is very enchanting. I get a chill looking down this cold, dark street. It's like peering into an icy portal from another dimension. Fabulous!
