Description

Inspired by bmac62's posting of a Lightning a few days ago, I rummaged through my Fibber McGee closet for film photos I had taken of a P-38 back in April 2001, on Visitor's Day at the March AFB museum in Riverside, CA. Fortunately, the prints were easy to find under all the flotsam and jetsam. That said, the fotos were then scanned and meticulously postworked for presentation, which should please the many aviation connoisseurs in the Renderosity audience. This P-38, just one of the few survivors of the 10,037 that were built between 1941 to 1945, at a 1941 cost of $97,147 per unit, was the only aircraft that is/was sheltered in a hanger at the museum. All the other aircraft are/were sitting outside, exposed to the elements. So, evidently, this P-38 is a pampered baby, lovingly restored and maintained by the volunteers at the base. The docent at that time had been a Lightning pilot during WWII. The armament on the front of the nacelle consists of one 20mm cannon and four .50 caliber machine guns. If you want to check out the extensive history and specifications on this noble bird, there's tons/tonnes of stuff on it in Google. Incidentally, the red blurring on the left side of the bottom photo is on the film original, and I was too lazy after all the other postwork to fix it. Thankx for dropping by, and have scintillating Sunday.

I have absolutely nothing knowledgeable to say about this aircraft; I'll leave that to those people who have a clue. And being firmly of the "if we were meant to fly we'd have wings" group, all I can do is offer my compliments on your photographic skills, Harry!

Looking good Harry. Glad you found your 2001 prints of this spiffy P-38. This one looks like it was completely airworthy at the time you found it. Got any more :)?

What I like best about planes is that they take me to places I want to go. I also love looking out the windows. I know a big one from a little one, and that it's impossible that something so big can get off the ground. But, having said that, I really like that middle shot, the POV is great!!

Well, you know I'm not into planes and such, but you got some really nice shots here, Harry, and it must have been a very enjoyable day for you to see these sitting in the hangar like this. :)
