Description

... the perfect remedy for a long hard day =) I think this is the first post of prepared food I'll have done here... bit odd considering I keep a folder in my photos titled 'food' (and flowers incidentally, but again I rarely post... others do it better ;)) Usually what happens is that hunger prevails and the most I can be bothered to do is a quick hand-held snap with high iso and onboard flash. On this occasion I took a good half hour setting everything up and guaging my intended exposure before even starting cooking.. no excuses! We've been cooking such an amount of good fresh food lately I thought it was time to start practising shooting as well as eating it! This kind of shot I don't have bags of experience with, and would welcome any advice. Settings used are at the bottom of this caption. This was last night's dinner and I have to say it was much enjoyed by all who partook. On the plate we have (all homemade apart from the bread): oven baked lemon & garlic chicken; green leaf salad with red peppers, tomatoes and vinaigrette dressing; garlic & sundried tomato flatbread; oven roasted peppers stuffed with tomato, basil and mozzarella. Yum! Settings used: Focal length 16mm Manual exposure: ISO 100 Av f/8 Tv 10sec Flash exposure compensation -2/3 .. my biggest shortfall in equipment for shots like this is in lighting... I only have use of the onboard flash and whatever else I can lay my hands on around the house. I wedged a big blob of blu-tac just under the flash and jammed a cd into it such that it crudely bounced the flash off the white ceiling. Then during the 10 second exposure I used a flashlight to gently paint the food with light. A real makeshift job, so any tips on lighting from others on a budget would always be warmly received ;) Enjoy your evening! Adam

Do you think you realy need any help? This is excelent Adam. Clever with a selective coloring and a light used well to set a special evening mood. I might would use white vine, I find a red stand a side from the pastel candle and salt/pepper holder.

cheers Tunde...I have a thirst for knowledge, I always need help ;) you're absolutely right about the wine.. it would have complemented the other white light in the background... unfortunately we only had red and I didn't think far enough ahead to how it might look against a backdrop. 'twas a fairly tasty drop though nonetheless!

Must agree with the comments above and add that I like your POV...makes me feel all I have to do is spread the missing napkin across my lap and dig in. Your lighting is the highlight of this photo. Your food preparation and consumption had to have been your reward:)

Hard to suggest anything else (apart from the red wine) that would improve this. I'm salivating furiously just looking at it. The soft lighting effect on the candles is a really nice touch. Whats for dessert ?

A fine start to many more refined images I'm sure. Good use of makeshift tools to achieve a goal. The food is very well rendered with good texture & controlled highlights. I do think the background could have been less cluttered by eliminating the S & P shakers, large white candle & one small candle. This would put even more emphasis on the main subject. And yes, white wine would have been perfect in more ways than one! Overall, a very good image! Keep at it! -James

Everything you do is so good; you know I've been painting with light recently; I should consider different props .. something other than flowers etc... this is awesome. A real inspiration. Just keep being you.
