Description
I wrote a very detailed description of how I did this but I lost it. I forgot to click the last checkbox certifying that I did not violate the TOS. Grrr.
So I'm not going to type it all again.
Rendered in Poser Pro with built-in gamma correction enabled. Render time was about an hour.
Used my environment sphere with an image by Aldo found here:
http://flickr.com/photos/82678249@N00/2626866515
I generated the IBL to use with it from that image using my GenIBL tool. I also used a single infinite light at 270% intensity for the sun.
Planes, color maps, and bump maps by bazze. Shaders by me.
Slight postwork in Picasa (Glow effect) to simulate lens artifacts produced by internal reflection and dispersion. I don't usually do postwork but the photo-realism is missing if you have a too-clean render.
Worth a click for full size, IMO.

Very good composition/POV and light. Very good match between 3D model and background picture.

very nice, detailed textures on the plane, and you show them off beautifully. i actually think the background (doesn't have the res for it, so the compression shows, what can you do?) and the propellors shows better in the small version, but the plane bodies are even more impressive in full. i like how realistic the lighting looks, and the progression of the planes.
Touchwood
Nice to see the ailerons and elevators positioned as they should be in a turn as well. A detail often overlooked.

This is impressive! And yes those flap thingies which I have no idea of what is called... Thing is, the attention to details is what makes this so perfect. Of course I wouldn't have expected less from you ;)
