Description
Catherine is escorted by her father through the halls of Versailles to attend the royal reception.
NOTES:
I am calling this a work in progress because it is not really a fully realized scene in the Cartographer's Daughter series -- it's more a test for the characters and costumes.
One of the rewards/curses of doing historical renders is negotiating the boundary between precise period accuracy and laughable anachronism. The year for this series is 1703, chosen because that was the date of the map I used in the first render. The untrained eye will probably notice right away that Catherine's hair is not quite right, although pretty, the Audrey hair is much too modern. It does suggest a sort of updo style, which would have been seen at the turn of the eighteenth century, but period accuracy would call for more fontange, which (I gather from my research) involved erecting a small radio broadcast tower on the front part of the lady's head and decorating it with lace and beads and stray bits of hair. I welcome any suggestions regarding what availble hair object might fit the bill.
Catherine's dress is also not quite accurate, since Marie Antoinette reigned more than sixty years later (her husband, Louis XVI was the great-grandson of Catherine's monarch). But the differences between this and a roccoco era dress would be seen more in the way the train falls in the back of the dress rather than the front, besides Chohole's free textures are just too beautiful to pass up.
I am pleased with the dial spun Michael 4 character I made to represent Catherine's father. He seems to have the stolid look of bourgeoise determination that fits his role in the story. Michael 4 with morphs is a remarkably versatile and easy to use base figure, and there is something about masculine faces that allows you to use a greater range of morphs on each feature without the whole effect becoming grotesque or unrealistic.
However, since there are fewer clothing options for male characters, I was at a loss to continue the series until I discovered Chohole's textures for the DAZ pirate costume. I think the raven texture coat and pants is much less raffish than the original pirate options and suits a prosperous tradesman better. I did subsitute the DAZ tuxedo vest for the pirate vest because it buttons up all the way, which I think might be expected for a meeting with the king.
The father's lace collar is also very much a work in progress. I could not find an object that looked realistically like the spread lace neckpieces that men of the era would wear for formal occasions. The closest I could simulate is to borrow Daz's 19th century scarf for men and retexture it with a lace transmap, adding a couple of triangular planes to give it more volume. I may have to model one of my own to move on the the next render.
I welcome any feedback on this and any suggestions for historically accurate garments and objects to complete the next scene, which will involve an audience with the Sun King himself.
I am very much indebted to the wonderful period textures by Chohole, available at chohole.francimi.net. Costumes are the Marie Antoinette dress for V4 and the pirate costume for M4 from Daz. The ballroom setting is also from Daz.
Audry hair by SWAM and the Wavytress hair by Maria are in Renderosity free stuff.

Very nice idea. Since it's a WIP. Maybe he could be holding some rolled up maps to sort of mirror her holding the fan.
