In the Eternal Balance there is Law, Chaos and the centerpoint - Balance.
Part two of the Trio of Chaos, Law and Balance - I give you Phoenix - reborn. (some of you have seen her before in my gallery, this is the new and updated version)
Phoenix is the balance point not only between the dual natures of Law and Chaos but also the one who holds the Balance between Darkness and The One in line -- so she basically pulls double duty playing peacemaker between them.
However, Like the being of her namesake, she has her own dark side, and it is in those times when the Dark Phoenix rules over her that Chaos and Ruin run rampant. For ages beyond counting she was able to keep the good and evil in her in relative balance (and considering how long she's been around, that's a long time not to completely loose your temper).
Unfortunately, about 800 years ago (give or take a few) the Dark Phoenix got the better of her and there was a casualty a man by the name of Jack Blackstone got in her way when she erupted in a blaze of dark fire. He was consumed by Phoenix's essence and took a part of it into himself. In essence becoming the personification of that aspect of Phoenix - the Dark. Now the two keep each other in balance.
Since that time Jack has been Phoenix's constant companion and most loyal friend. He, in and of himself, is neither evil or good, but, like Phoenix, a balance, even if his leanings are to a more dark path. The ideal of Yin and Yang since their merging, neither gains too much power while the other is nearby, neither can they destroy the other.
While Phoenix genuinely works to keep the balance set between the Dark and Light/Chaos and Law, Jack, well.....Jack is just a fun loving cad who loves to romance the ladies, get into a few good brawls every half century or so, and pester Phoenix endlessly.
As he absorbed a portion of her life-force during her rebirth, he is, in essence, her equal, but as he was consumed by Dark Fire, he is holder of the dark flame and his rebirths tend to be to one extreme or another. Usually he, like Phoenix herself, returns much the same, none the worse for wear, but sometimes....both can go to the extremes of their limits and must shut each other down before more destruction than they can collectively heal is wrought.

Both Phoenix and Jack are characers from an ongoing roleplay, but Phoenix stands as the eternal balance between Darkness and The One as well as peacemaker between Synn and Dragon...when she's not annoying Jack, that is. She is equal only in power to Darkness and The One, but as one cannot survive without the other, she is one of the Triad of true Eternal Beings.
Darkness' creation, on the other hand...well, that is another matter.
