Description
Replicas of the of the Susan Constant (stern view)and the Godspeed in the background docked at Jamestown, Virginia on the James River.
In 1607, 13 years before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, a group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement on the banks of Virginia's James River. These ships plus the Discovery brought the first colonists to Virginia. They were sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, whose stockholders hoped to make a profit from the resources of the New World. The community suffered terrible hardships in its early years, but managed to endure, earning the distinction of being America's first permanent English colony.

It's hard to imagine what that was like. They were very brave. Beautiful shot.

I like the perspective of this picture. The bold colors of the closest ship with the other ship in the distance makes for a dramatic shot. I can't imagine being one of more than 100 passengers and/or crew on these tiny ships.

I love when the tall ships come to Hampton Roads, it almost feels like time never passed. Beautiful capture!

Oh! I LOVE the 'balcony' on the closest ship! I have to say that as one who gets seasick easily, I cannot even imagine crossing the ocean in one of these ships!!! Hardier people than I am, surely!!! Great capture!
