Description

This is one of the most photographed sites in Jersey, I often drive to here and watch the waves and the world go by. Sunday was a really windy day as mentioned in my last two photo's, but it makes this area even more attractive and sometimes a little scary. Completed in 1873, the lighthouse was the first in the British Isles to be made of concrete rather than the traditional stone. It stands 135ft above mean sea level and the light- originally lit by paraffin oil- can be seen from up to 18 miles away. On a clear day it is one of the first landmarks to be sighted by anyone travelling on the ferry from the neighbouring island of Guernsey. It's name is translated as "gathering place of the crows". Thanks for your views and comments Susan

Great shot Susan. I like all lighthouses but this is something really special. It is hard to imagine mixing and pouring concrete out there:)

An amazing place, and I can only imagine what life was like for the keeper who had to stay or travel there to take care of the light! Nice shot!!

Wonderful capture! I love lighthouses I have seen are very different than this, I have never seen one that is surrounded by water like this! Marvelous stormy scene!
