Wish I had asked her name.
I spied this very attractive young lady simply watching us one day in a small village in Tra Vinh Province. I pointed to my camera, she smiled and obligingly stepped in among a small grove of coconut trees. This was the pleasant result.
This image comes from a small 2 by 3 1/2 inch, locally processed, B&W print. Backlighting is a problem. I have added a soft filter to partially obscure the effects of the brilliant late morning sun.
Tra Vinh is bordered by the Mekong on both the north and south and by the South China Sea on the east. It is river delta land at its finest. The Province is covered by a crazy quilt of rice patties, irregation canals, small farm towns and is ringed by numerous tiny fishing villages.
Thanks for all your interest in these photos taken in Vietnam by me in 1965-66. You are among the first people to have ever seen them.

I like this picture VERY much (B&W, indeed attractive lady, graphic & creative composition,special mood,...) --> fav ! I have only a small remark : making it an exact square format would further take the lady away from the center of the image and so, make an even better composition... :~)

yes, I agree with Skipper, nothing wrong with your postwork, you coaxed out the mystical quality within. It's amazing to hear how you got these, it's real photography stuff: Catching photographs without the time to prepare or get subjects in line, using the quickness of eye & mind, trusting the inner eye to show you the right shot, knowing that you may get a lot of shots that won't 'do' it, but knowing you'll get those that do; and collecting a record, a true journal of the lives you passed by & got to know for a moment and then left forever—with bits of their essence captured on something as flimsy as 'film'...I've corresponded with photojournalists from war & other places, and they've all said they found themselves simply listening to their insides as well as their out, that they had but a moment to get their 10 shots—of which one would be "the one"—and they just went out and let the place and their hearts guide them. So much skill & connection seemed to play-out in those moments, even when the photographer didn't know it...And, like you, they got too much sun, too little sun, people getting in the way, flare, etc etc, because they were photographing life, esp. in war; and yet they caught the same moments of timelessness that we all know in peace. Miracles. A wonderful shot, and your story of the things you had to contend with are all part of it. Another fav. Can't help it, this is a wonderful series...

These shots are amazing and to tell you the truth, I have shied away from looking closely at any photos from here. Some I've had to see - no choice when photos are everywhere you turn - and since the "conflict" ended, I have turned my head when I have been able. The scenes have been so painful and so upsetting. This series, though, has been delightful and given me new images to hold in my memory that take much of the anxiety out. I worked for almost 6 years with new refugees, trying to make them and their neighbors comfortable in the Sacramento area. I learned alot through their words and now I am seeing what they told me about. I love the postwork on this shot and the effect is quite fetching.

Oh my. This is ... ... ... my friend, words fail me. I shall have to resort to the technical in order to make a meaningful comment. Your postwork is excellent - I love the softness of the surroundings, drawing our eye directly to your subject. I didn't see it before you cropped, but this is absolutely perfect, composition wise. As for the emotional impact ... this leaves my jaw on the floor.
