Description

Leadership of Tra Vinh Province gathered in 1966 prior to a ceremony bidding farewell to the outgoing American Senior Advisor (back to the camera). Among the Vietnamese leaders: Province Chief (Lieutenant Colonel Twonh with sun glasses), Catholic, Buddhist, Hoa Hao and Cao Dai priests/monks, civilian administrators, and the local District Chief. This is my sixth photo in a mini-series, all in B&W of positive times in South Vietnam, 1965-66. Link to yesterday's posting: Dry Goods This will be the end of this series for the time being. I thank you all for the fantastic support and encouragement you have given me to keep digging in yesteryear's photo box. There are a lot of 35mm slides hiding in that box and all taken by me. I'll see if there are a few plums in there for the future. Bill:)

another of your panoramic shots because of the angle & inclusiveness, and a scene not nearly as possible today, ie, leaders & monks & priests & American military, all in one shot. I'm telling you, there is so much photojournalism in this series, it's really amazing. This is a period piece, a time capsule, and the music of the heads & bodies make for a fascinating pastiche; and several different walks of life all brought together for the departure of a military advisor: It's truly rich. I'm in mourning that this series is done for now. Thank you for posting it, it was a true treasure!

Wonder how many of those folks made it through until 73 and then the turmoil thereafter....

This has been an incredibly powerful series. I think maybe this is my favorite, because it has so many different people in it, a combination almost impossible to replicate. As someone who lived this time through my boyfriend's letters, watched it on TV, and knew way too many who went, I thank you for sharing this other side. It just proves we're all on this planet together.

  • blinks * Wow. You were right to cherry-pick that box, my friend. Every single image in this series has been top notch. I'm SO glad you took the time to go through your old images and share these with us. I stand in awe at the quality, the intensity, the historical significance ... absolutely outstanding.

Terrific POV employed in this memorable photo of the top leadership honchos all assembled to bid farewell to American Senior Advisor, Bill. And, I believe you meant "plum" instead of "plumb."

I'm with Rob on this Bill, if you are happy to post them we really need to see more of these. I grew up in the 70's seeing all the pictures that most have seen but these are different, many things must have happened and everyone there has a story to tell but not everyone had a camera I imagine so these give us a rare insight. Sorry for going on but I find these fascinating Bill.

Please post any you will...this is your view, not views we have already seen in history and from those actual times. Certainly some members here were not born at the time and it might be difficult to understand past times of Viet Nam. During my advanced infantry training, we barracked with troops who had returned from Laos just after the time of your photo. It is good to see positive times.

Your ability to take excellent photos goes way back. I keep looking at that priest and thinking he looks like our president. :P

This is a fine bit of historical photography. One is given to wonder what happened to the religious leaders over the next 10 years.
