Description
As promised, here is the second image – Pin Insulator (wip). Again, credit for the background goes to DAZ for my use of their MP Cyclorama. This test image shows a blue glass (“must be from Kentucky”) pin insulator and the associated pin hardware. Please ignore the ugly cross bar to which they are mounted as it does not represent the quality of work for which I strive. Purists may also find fault with my ‘binding wire’ (I am not a linesman, and I haven’t stumbled across the correct term – I mean the wire that binds the line to the insulator), since it would not survive a good old Nor’easter. I am working on that, but since its shape depends on two other objects, it is proving nearly more complicated than my previous models. My poor, aged laptop was never intended for more than word processing; and requires a more creative approach to the process of modeling to keep it from crashing (it especially balks at Chucky Booleans).
I apologize for the delay in getting this image uploaded; I was unaware of the upload limit. Since I have to hike across town to a friend’s house to access the Internet (I cannot currently afford such luxuries), it usually takes a few days for me to get back online. I have a third model, which is nearly complete, of a tunnel (or bridge, depending on where the tracks are placed). I am preparing to move, so please understand if there is a brief delay.
As a kid, I used to hike a mile or two through the woods to a hulking, granite railroad bridge over the river. My parents moved to Maine on the railroad before B&M discontinued passenger service in the late 50’s or early 60’s. My friends and I would look for the old glass insulators, and massed a fine collection (lost now to time). Anyway, that was several decades ago, so I have had to collect photographs to refresh my memory.
