Description

My late, dear friend Chandra was meditating one day. Someone asked, "what's in the soul?" She whispered: "velvet......and......sand......" This is what she meant: That the soul's all softness & caress (velvet), and it stretches forever with the voice of the ages (sand): Softness & vastness, deep & majestic...that's what I feel from Nancy... I found Nancy's art--ie Gaiadriel (here)--and immediately I felt that presence. It isn't just her fractals--which range from landscapes to abstracts to everything else--it's her soul. I was stunned at how much intensity she infused into the smallest places; that she articulated open spaces with such intimate detail; that she illuminated energy itself--inner energy, soulful energy: that she made it all visible. Even her jewel-like pieces--where fractals look like the prototype for every crystalline-form on earth--have her ever-modulated dance, her intimacy, her love. Occasionally she'll write a poem too, and it'll affirm everything she's just painted... I can't quite explain my images, Nancy: Are they softness & vastness--I don't know! But I feel that images, for you, are like sending your children into the world bedecked with ancient jewels; and while I don't know you well as a person, through your art I've seen an ocean of love & compassion, 'velvet & sand', and offerings from the depths of a rapturous heart, and for that I am deeply grateful...
* * * * * * Friends: I've so much back-work, it never seems to end (and I turn 60 this weekend on top of it!) So bear with me if it takes me a few days to catch up: I'll get there! Peace to all and thanks for all your wonderful visits! Mark (Photoshop)

Mark...long ago my wife and I attended one of those marriage seminars aimed at enhancing an already flourishing relationship. I'll never forget the key point I walked away with... That point was that all of us have a primary love language: some use words, some touching, others giving. Your language must have to do with words. This is one beautiful tribute to Nancy (Gaiadriel) and for that matter Chandra too. Your illustration does say velevt and sand to me. The colors are magnificent. This is going directly into my favorites. Whoa...almost forgot to wish you happy birthday...youngster:)

Wow Mark this is such a wonderful and moving dedication to one of the sweetest ladies I know. She deserves all the praise sent her way and considering all she has been through recently I know she will cherish this one so much. What your late friend Chandra said was so wise and touching, I will never forget her way of describing what was in the soul. I understand you have a birthday coming up my friend so let me say HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mark :)

I could do 60 again! LOL. Seriously Mark, this is a stunner and I do see the influence you talked about to me, but seriously this is so your own. The way you've broken the surface for the Sand one is really nicely done, and overall I think this is a good realization of your friends words. Fer'shure a special one.

There is so much that I don't know, not least of which is how to find words enough (and trust me, I've been here, grappling), in thanks, for your extraordinary thoughts, words, and images. Words of thanks.. any one of them..or any grouping...just seem completely inept, and far, far too small. I feel small and yes, completely undeserving of such praise. But, with joy-painted, tear-stained cheeks, and both arms extended to you...thank you, I must...from that deepest place inside (((Mark))). These images are not simply to view, but to experience. And, I have! I received your noti about the post, arrived here, opened, and oh, how surreal. Instantaneous energy abounds... welcoming warmth and quiet coolness simultaneously..and the softest, most peaceful, loving light. It poured from within the images..pure gentleness...and I found myself in such a tranquil space. So, from the very first instant I encountered these beautiful outpourings of you, there was no doubt as to the energy infused within. (And that, of course, the greatest of gifts). The gammet of your own soul, echoes throughout.. radiant. Not merely idle words...but wholly, purest truth. Yet you honestly wonder...Velvet and Sand..and your own creations. Indulge me two words? Please. Don't. And to be able to stake even the tiniest personal claim to these, also at your hands...is a bounty, and a treasure. The representations couldn't be more perfect, Mark. Each is without beginning, or end. A slow, rhythmic, soulful-undulation. And as the soul...without constraint.....incalculable...boundless. Full, and empty. Smooth, and abraded. Miniscule, and massive. All, and nothing. I've reached several times, out of want to actually feel (you'll have to forgive that I'm stricken with a terminal case of sensory overload, and am annoyingly tactile..lol) the small, but prounounced rough patch, in the foreground on the lower left of the bottom image. I'm repeatedly drawn to that spot. Perhaps I needed the nudge of a reminder that sometimes we need to be unafraid of the roughest there is, to embrace, so that we can be eroded again into our softest state, like rock worn and made perfectly smooth, by the constant motion of flowing water. I can't say why that particular thought happened, only that...it did. And, still does. And, because it also must be said.. modesty alone doesn't tell you that I am also incredibly honored by Chandra's clear presence here as well. I remember, vividly, that one of my first encounters of you was a particular posted image, and story, a promise fulfilled to her. To have you place my own name inside/outside your thoughts, so close as within even a kindred paragraph with her, is also an exceptionally precious gift, and one that I value. It felt important that you were aware of that. I hope you understand. Again, a heartpouring of thanks to you. This gift, I will cherish always. It is a grounding place that I will revisit often in the future, especially when I need some terra firma, a grounding spot, a place to sit quietly in the center of the circle, while yes and no chase each other around my circumference. :) Warmth, peace, strength to you...and gracious, profound thanks...

These pieces are fascinating and dynamic. The first one has the intensity of passion and the second one has the energy that drives one to reach their goal. Both are dynamic in fluidity and fill the mind with delight. Beautiful work all around and such lovely and generous dedications. Excellent work!

Happy birthday, Mark! 60 is only a couple of years off for me too, and I certainly don't feel old (at least not usually!) These images are arresting and entrancing...I'm not good at putting feelings into words, but these would be wonderful to have really huge and on the wall.
