Description

The border between dawn and daylight was a matter of opinion on New Mars. When they reached their home door, the Martian dawn was showing off in all its glory, but no one of them was in a sentimental mood. The ambush was a proof that he had been zeroed in, and that another, possibly even more lethal attack, would follow very soon. How much time he was left depended only on the "how" who wanted him dead, would decide to proceed. He tought that "his" Martians were now in danger and felt annoyed with himself. He had just discovered that he was worrying for them and the first rule in his line of work was never get emotionally involved. He decided that it was better for all of them that he went elsewhere before the situation got worse. He didn't know where to go, so he packed his few things and entered the common room. All of them were there: Eve, Adam and the two kids, looking at him in a strange way he couldn't decipher. "I believe it's better I move on - he told them - I'd like to thank you..." "Do you always run away when you are in a fix?" Adam interrupted him. J.S. felt the blow and retorted "I'm not running away, I simply don't want to involve other people in my troubles". Eve broke the silence "Do you really believe that, when we saved your life, we didn't know the risks? We usually don't run across a high-ranking piece of junk like you in a dump. Outside you wouldn't last one day, because also the Martians would open the hunting season, without our protection. In any case, I don't believe your enemies would leave us alone, and our future wouldn't be harm free. No, you must stay, it's the only solution". J.S. knew only too well that when a woman speaks in that tone of voice, every discussion is fruitless. Moreover she had assessed the situation correctly: they would be killed too. He sighted and gave up: "OK, if you think that together we can do it, I'll stay. But on condition that I re-furnish the house with some booby traps here and there. Deal?" "Deal!" They replied. Then it followed some busy hours for J.S. and real fun for the others. Thank you to all people who appreciated the previous picture! Thank you for viewing and drop a note if you like! believe it or not, this is where I left off in my last return to RR (ie, months back). First I want to thank you for always commenting so kindly in my gallery, even when I've been away so long. And for being patient while I slowwwwwly meander my way through gallery after gallery (I have several after this one, too), and take so long to comment. I'm hoping that this time around, I'll come back for seconds & thirds, etc, as my health & life are starting to allow that...That being said, you know how hard it is to go back to 2009, to pick up where I left off? Pretty embarrassing. I expect a guard to come up to me & say, "Sir? This part of the gallery is CLOSED!" I'd love it if we could build a virtual Conservator's laboratory, and have our older uploads sitting on tables while conservators clean them and re-frame them. Anyway, I'm here, so here goes... I noticed right away a real writer's choice: J.S. is ready to go with good reason. But immediately Eve tells him what THEY went through, and that they took as much of a risk as he may take. Good fictional narrative goes beyond action after action & throws wrenches in the actions so we suddenly see that other characters have suffered too (or had difficult decisions to make too). And, at that point, the narrative complicates, is enriched, and we get much closer to all involved. It was a good choice, and it's what keep this narrative both rich & going forward. And of course it thickens the plots, the relationships, etc. Her speech is very persuasive. It's the turning point in the installment. Re the visual---like all your visuals, it's quite complex. Even down to the floral pattern on the screen in the background. (Looks like a Japanese motif in the screens/doors behind it.) I also like the contrast of the two children---very much from a children's or folk tale---compared to the much more realistic adults. Nice how you weave them together, visually. And of course the details in the booby trap (to be). I love that the wire going inside that clothes-pin is stuck into a wrist (on the other end). And the kids glee at the whole thing. In fact, it looks like the science labs of my high school days---which I assume is what these people had, at hand. And nice glimpses of the Martian dawn in the background, and your right-most blinds, etc. Nice detail work. I still say that your visuals show artistry all by themselves, as is evidenced by the visuals you've posted without narrative (and of course in your photography). Flavia, my fav's have given me nothing but troubles, so I've just abandoned them since coming back, therefore I'm not faving anyone this time around. (It's across the board, not personal.) But like I say to some others, consider your work fav'd, because of the time you put in to it and your skill both verbally and visually. As I've said before, doing narrative & image is quite an operation. And you deserve the kudos you've gotten.
