Description
Anyone familiar with the middle to lower reaches of the Thames will, most likely, have heard of Salters Steamers.
The company started out in 1858 as boat builders but branched into passenger cruises in 1888, primarily as a passenger service between Kingston and Oxford.
Around 1900, Salters started to build some of their own pleasure steamers and added three new vessels between 1901 and 1902. These were Marlow (1901), Reading (1901) and Sonning (1902).
Sonning ceased service with Salters in 1982 and is now with Green's Passenger Launches on the River Trent. Reading is still in service and is now the oldest survivor still in the Salter fleet.
Marlow ceased service in 1974 and appears to have been laid up at Peter Freebody's yard by Hurley Lock since then. It certainly looks very sorry for itself at the moment.
I’m not sure why it has been moved to my neck of the Thames – I rather hope it is on its way to restoration. I’ll have to try and find out its fate.
