Description

This is the entrance to the saloon area of the steamer where there would have been seats with tables and refreshments were served during the trip. There would also have been steps up to the roof of the saloon as more seating was on this upper deck. The raised area on the left was where the steering and controls were located. Also, at the back of this area, was the funnel. Most of these boats were originally steam powered but were converted to diesel over a lengthy period between the 1930’s to 1960’s. (Though I’m not exactly certain on the dates) I am just old enough to remember some of the steamers lowering their funnel to pass under Caversham Bridge – but that may have only been the bigger ones. ------------------------------- Original Photograph 28-Mar-2009
