Description

I have had dozens of requests from people wanting to know what the enemy Nalonnea Ships look like from my book (If I ever get the darn thing published)... This model is one of the largest of the enemy ship classes which face off against the Imperial Dominion Star Fleet. I will be making a battle scene with a Sparrowhawk wing attacking one of these beasts. If you have no idea of what I am talking about (And sometimes I don't even have an idea.), then just read the captions under my other ship models. This is the Nalonnea Arkera Class Gigastar. These lumbering behemoths are the embodiment of Nalonnea design philosophy. It is very primitive in design when compared to the Imperial Dominion's much higher standard of technology. The Nalonnea prefer to produce thousands of less advanced ships to oppose the Dominion's much more technologically evolved but less numerous vessels. This tactic of strength in numbers, or quantity over quality, is the primary reason the war between the Nalonnea and the Dominion has lasted as long as it has. These ships are large, slow, armed to the teeth (albeit with much less advanced weapons), and are sheathed in massive amounts of armor. No crew amenities are included. And, the entire ship is designed as a giant mobile gun platform. A Sparrowhawk class Attack Cruiser of the Dominion Fleet is just over 3.5 miles in length and yet can easily fit down the main gun barrel of one of these ships. Which incidentally is a favored tactic of Sparrowhawk commanders. Knowing that the Nalonnea main gun takes a minimum of 46 seconds to recharge between each shot; they time it and literally fly down the main gun barrel, firing all weapons, dropping bomblets, and launching missiles all along the way once inside the barrel. They then make their own exit using their main weapons and fly out the back end of the now disintegrating enemy vessel. This is just one way Sparrowhawk commanders have come up with to avoid having to punch through the heavy Nalonnea armor.

This is probably the most complicated model I have done to date. It has over 20,000 individual elements. The trick was to make it detailed but not too advanced. This render was a quickie. For the battle scene I am planning I will be making it really high quality.

FYI, I don't work for or own any stock in Booklocker.com. I subscribe to their newsletter and occasionally share info with Angela the owner on the publishing industry when I come across it (I don't work for the publishing industry either).... Have you checked out Publish on Demand for your book? Talk to Angela at Booklocker.com; Worst case scenario, she answer questions and best case she can get you started. Nice image!

Thanks. I did them in Paint Shop Pro with the Alien Skin Xenofex II constellation plug in. I created about 6 different layers with different settings and then messed with the hues and saturation of each to get the different colors and brightnesses. Then I just addded in two nebula templates I had already done, and set the layer modes to a combination of Overley, screen and multiply depending on what I wanted to let each layer do. One of the nebulas went to the top and was set as overlay to get the 3D effect.
