Description

Oil on canvas 30x 40" Step 2 playing with the sky , I love to paint skys /clouds.... first paint the area with medium mixed with your darkest color ( i use cheap stuff found at any hardware store boiled lindseed oil, turpentine and japan drier ) Paint your darks first keeping the darks thin then add your lights and have fun step back often and you'll discover some neat things!!!! ( Best part about painting is the discoverys you make along the way) About an hour on the sky here . I may go back to the sky later but for now I'm ok with it ! By the way make your lights thicker and don't clean your brush lights on one side and darks on the other play and have fun..... let it happen .... this is the beauty of oils!!!! This is the only step They'll let me upload for one day. Bob Ross signign out now (poor attempt at humor) tom

cool looking painting and drawing , like your technique, mine is rush the brush lol and i was always told a painter should never step back to admire his work cos he will fall off the ladder. keep up the good work and i hope to see it when its done.

Love reading about your process, Tom. The sky is fantastic. I suggest a working title might be "Pondering, a wip". You make an important point about the "discoverys you make along the way". I think it should be like that with every work, call it communing with the spirit of the paint. LOL If you can, keep an ongoing journal with the image and your description. Then, in the end, you can upload in the Tutorial section under a Hosted Tutorial. It will have everything in a progressive way in one tutorial. It would be great for future reference.

I'm happy you made the decision to share with us Tom....This is very informative and helpful to me and to anyone who wants to take up the magic of oil painting. I don't think I told anyone this but its actually my favorite medium.... You can smell it. touch it, taste it (I wouldn't advise!!! ,,lol), feel it and hear it as it gets worked up...Layer upon layer of love and affection...Until.....You have a work of art that will now last as long or longer(depending on many variables) than just about any other painting medium.... Not to mention all the great painters who's oils were the primary inspiration for mine and a great many others love for art...And it has a better life in the "real" world than digital 0'ss and 1's....A complete and beautiful "hands-on" experience no one should miss trying for themseleves... Tom's is a shining example of artists helping artists!!! I encourage everyone to follow Tom's example and go for it!!!!! Paintings are born and grown outside the digital world...just like us.!!!.... Well done my friend....Your generosity astounds me!!!!Kudos sir and as always best of luck with everything!!! Rob

This is truly great. I have very little skill with the pigments, but it's always fascinating to see the process of a great artist.
