Description
This step will probably appear boring to most... As I don't have a refference for the hill , other than my line drawing , i decided to let it paint itself, While I look at your postings.
In a way I'm not kidding, It's comprised of two glazes, the first was last night, first I coat the area with my cheap painting medium with an extra amount of japan drier allowing it to set for a 1/2 hour or so, then mixed up some mars black, yellow ochre , raw umber, van dyke brown and a touch thalo blue (by the way this is the exact same pallette used for the sky, with the exception of titanium white for clouds), anywy after its sat awhile I then use a saturated brush, medium and turpentine mixed with the mentioned mix of colors ,using suggestive brushstrokes I begin to basically stab and sweep at the canvas ,letting the paint run naturally, its a very quick process , 5 minutes, the 2 different mediums drying and running at different rates cause an unpredictable effect as found in the world around us, I then did the same thing today, only with more yellow ochre added to put some green in it and to create more variety .
So now I'm beginning to see some things in here that I can build on pulling the lights and pushing the darks .
This is a very large area probably 30 square inches, and if I was to start painting it conventionally it would get repetitious and boring (ever stare at something and see something unintended? thats what I'm looking for art fom within us, not allways deliberate but discovered)
Anyway thanks for looking And your kind words thus far, Hope I don't bore you with this work in progress !!!!
tom
p.s. I had too take this outside and shoot it at an angle , because of the wet shine, so that should explain the color dif.

Coming along nicely. Is that a skull I see in the hill deliberate or just a Rorschach effect?
allisonbender
Shadownet, It is deliberate < it's the only planned part of this hill ! From the word Golgatha (translated it means the skull, thats what they called the hill where Christ was crucified) tom

Fascinating. Wish my father was still around to follow you through on this. He worked in pen and ink, charcoal, pastels and water colors. He would say he never graduated to oils. He had a great sense for color and successfully designed wallpaper. Rather than going forward into oils...he took up photography and worked in that medium for more than 80 years. So, I find myself sort of standing in for him...observing your technique in his stead. I'm enjoying it all.
