Description

This Curtiss P-40 'Warhawk', tail number 11456, painted in the colors of the 'Flying Tigers', the American Volunteer Group (AVG) that operated under Claire Chennault in the Burma/China Theater of War, crashed on 5 April 2009 into the waters near Smith Point County Park, Long Island. The owner and pilot, Robert Baranaskas, 61, did not survive. Baranaskas was practicing maneuvers while his son was videotaping them. The cause of the crash is not known at this time and is under investigation by the FAA. This picture was taken on 3 June 2006 at Reading, PA. Thank you for viewing and commenting and any favs. It is much appreciated, Sig...

We are going to Redding in early June for the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum World War II Show. We had looked forward to seeing this aircraft again.

i remember in 1975-76 while beeing a storekeeper for cargolux airlines on luxembourg airport we had kind of agreement with flying tigers for spare parts,or something,i was only stockkeeper so i dont know to what extend. ps.cargoluz airlines was founded out ot icelandair/icelandic. in the beginning i remember the canadair CL44, llj, llh, lli juliette and hotel and india prop machines,we had a dc-8 N805, wich was a DC-6-55 a clled it fat boy, the best vlooking was N866 a DC-8-63 wich was slender and longer than the 55 modell. i was also checking FAK flyawaykit while on duty and ac was in. also i remember a strange aircraft wich was from the base a cl44 but modified called the Guppy. cargolux later on concentrated a lot in doing maintenance for other companies when we got the new hangar. then came the time of the firts and second 747 . acv and bcv i think was their sign LX-BCV and LX-ACV. but i give you the link of their page. shame on me i never was on their page it was a closed chapter for me. and you bring me back memories and good ones at that. http://www.cargolux.com/Company/History.php

A fine picture of a very fine AND much under-rated aircraft. Used in vast number by the British and RAAF in Africa, and the Far East. Was the ONLY plane to get in air at Pearl Harbour. Plus of course, 'The Flying Tigers'.... I remember it posted before but its a mighty fine tribute showing it again... Good one. Rob.
