Description

And here are the dunes... the heart of the Namib Desert... (... and you thought we only saw pretty flowers and billowing clouds... lol) The Namib Desert is actually quite fascinating in that it is split in two destinct parts by the Swakop River running more or less through the middle of the desert... Well, running is not really the term to use - it is mostly bone dry but has come down in floud a couple of weeks before we visited. By the time we arrived, there was no sign of water in the river again! The Swakop River "flows" into the Atlantic Ocean at the quint town of Swakopmund. (Bruce fell in love with this town. I will place pictures in the days to come) Now - south of the Swakop River is the 'sand' desert and that is where you get the dunes. This part is also, for obvious reason, very difficult to explore and can only be done with special 4X4 vehicles and with highly trained guides. Believe me, you do not want to get lost in these dunes... North of the Swakop River is the 'stone' desert. It is harder, rocky soil with the odd mountain, but mostly flat plains. Close to the ocean you can sometimes find some dunes. Most of this part of the desert can be explored by 2X4 vehicles and is alive with fascinating plant and animal life. I will also place some images of this part. Today's image is south of the Swakop River and the dune at the back is known as Dune 7 - the 7 highest dune in the world! (Not sure where the others are!) Now, because I have nothing in the image to show scale, it is probably hard for you to imagine the size. Just believe me if I tell you that it is HIGH... Thank you for popping in and for your very valued comments and faves on my previous uploads. You guys all rock! Hugs, Carin xx

Ha, the legendary dune 7, like a swear word for army guys who had been there. Almost sensual lines in its harshness. Well captured Carin!

Gorgeous! The sand is a very powerful force, to be respected. We saw on our trip, where the sand takes over the road, there's no choice but to re-engineer the road or let it go at some point.

Nice shooting, but the border detracts from the shot. I think it is great without the border. But I love it anyway.
