Description
A remark by Marcopolinski (BTW, thank you!) about my avatar in my previous post made me think that it is only fair to show you where it comes from. It is another of the many pub signs in Leek, Staffordshire. I don't know whether there are more pubs with picturesque signs here than in the rest of Central England. The fact is that I love them, and I'll post more in the future.
This Quiet Woman sign means two things to me: first, my inordinate passion for folklore. Second, the fact that this woman, even if beheaded to keep her silent, stubbornly keeps showing her presence as a ghost. The lit candles in the chandelier she holds show that her quest for truth and reason has not been put out yet. Am I embroidering too much? (;D).
My mum usually told me: "You cannot always win, but if you feel wronged, don't bend forward at 90 degrees, and thank for the f. service. At least, protest!" Could I disobey my mum?

your words on protest & her spirit living-on, despite the attempts to quiet her, are right to the core. Defiance despite all her opposition...And your love for folklore is apparent in many places in your gallery, including in your love of shots like these, and the fact that you share its history & meanings with us. A powerful image, and thanks for sharing why you chose it for your avatar. (My avatar was my first brush...doesn't quite have the same power, does it!) And I agree with realmofillusion that this could be a woman who has retained her heart over her head, inner-wisdom over ego; but I imagine if this woman had her way, she'd liked to have retained both. The stunning thing is, she's much deeper & wiser than the people who made her this way to begin with. That's part of what you're saying, isn't it...

never disagree with mum or the wrath of the matrilineal side of your family will come down on you ... lol!! Embroidering too much?? Absolutely not. I loved your story ... go girl, go!! I share your interest in storytelling, and your explication here is highly noteworthy and heuristic in nature. And by the way ... it sthat a cool pub sign or what. Dang!! Fantastic capture and presentation (he says as they collectively cry for "MORE!! MORE!!) ....
