Description

Oil on canvas 30x40 inches Final Title: THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD. Well it's been a week since the last step posted and I was unable to work on it for more than an hour or two at a time, I've skipped ahead to the end . For those of you who have followed along with me on this, I'll describe the steps from where we left off, Thank you all for your patience and interest in this. Due to circumstances I probably would'nt have finished this piece, if it was'nt for your gracious comments and support, Thank you!!!!!!!! Picking up from the last step, It came to my attention that the hill was to dominant and cartoonish, so I mixed a glaze of medium and van dyke brown, yellow ochre and mars black, after coating the hill the sky was allso coated with the same mixture and rubbed off some with a paper towell here and there to different degrees , till recieving the desired affect, the intent was to try to achieve that weird color that happens sometimes after a storm. Moving to the wall, some more texture was aplied using a pallette knife, after this was dry, it was glazed here and there with thinned yellow ochre , trying to obtain a wet and somewhat satureated look as if it was wet from a recent rainstorm. Then added the greenery behind the 3 centurions, to help establish the perspective of the road. Moving to the lead actor I finished his armor, changed the gesture of his left hand ... And next his face, which is the most important factor in this painting, as his face has to tell most of the story , he had to look deep in thought and somewhat perplexed by the events that had transpired only a few hours earlier, yet I wanted him to have the look of a rugged and battle proven soldier .... a man who has seen it all!!! Surpisingly the face came easy with a minimun of brushstrokes .... I had fun painting it ... I think I had help!!!! Lastly the spear and the shield ..... finish!!! Once again you are all much apreciated!!!!!!!! tom p.s. I suffered a spiritual setback, and am not sure when I'll be able to post again. If your inclined to do so, say a prayer for me !!!

So you did rework the hills! Having followed the birth of this painting it is clear to me that we digital artists will never ever be able to match the result of a skilled traditional painter like Allison. Think only of the sheer size of it! 30x40 inch = 75x100 cm. Even if we assume 300 dpi (600 dpi is really the standard for art prints) it still will be a whopping 9000x12000 px computer image. If you have the largest monitor possible (1920x1080 -True HDTV) you would see only 1/10 of the image. The height of a monitor is about 30 cm and the height of the image at 72 ppi would be more than 4 meter! :))) And how much work didn't went into it? And knowledge of colors and how to mix colors, etc. Even after hundreds of years those colors will still be as fresh and clear as it was painted the day before. A fantastic and beautiful work with a message from an artist that have something to say.

Wonderful work and extremely well inspired. I have followed with huge attention your work step by step and I wonder about your talent and deep spirit. The face is very expressive and a masterwork. For me your work has been this days a true meditation and I want to thank you very much for it. The final result is very well balanced and the attention and composition send the center point in the face of the centurion. I would like to say many many things about but i don´t know how to explain well bec is not very easy for me to explain in English. Anyway I love your work very much not only like a masterwork of art but like a a true spiritual experience. Thousand stars. Congratulations!!!

This is outstanding, what is even more interesting, is that the title is so apt to what the three in the back would be saying... I've followed this from the onset and I have learned a lot from you. My prayers and thoughts with you as you recover from your set-back

vintorix, I never thought about the size before, as you put it but after trying to upload my stuff from photos, I have to keep resizing and resizing , etc. Finally came up with a size that will upload ... 10x13.33 inches ..... so a lot of detail is lost ............ wish you could see the originals !!!!! My art looks plastic here !!!!!! tom

Tom, I know that the gallery images are always a disappointment from the originals, but it still shows wonderfully, and displays your conscientious attention to details. I really appreciate you sharing your process. It was more than interesting to me, and makes me think how important the eye-heart connection is to art. This is stunning and emotionally piercing.

congratulations on this wonderful painting! it is such a wonderful story telling scene with so much atmosphere, i just love it (and all the more because you shared the progress so wonderfully with your commentary). each scan, each photo doesnt come close to what is right in front of your eyes, i know that from my own drawing with pencils and polychromos. wonderful work, tom, thanks for sharing this!

A powerful, moving painting and very impressive work, Tom. You're in my prayers. Sometimes as we move closer, the enemy of our soul works harder to get a foothold. Just remember how much you are loved by the Lord. His arms are outstretched still.
