Description
The Waterloo is a pub on the road from Leek to Stoke-on-Trent. The storm was brewing and I took just this quick shot from the car.
Among my many weaknesses, there are military history and Regency novels. Thus I couldn't help enhancing a little the epic, romantic mood of the photo.
Speaking of "brewing" (pardon me the pun), this brewing storm reminds me of the sad situation of the hop (Humulus lupulus, L.) male flowers. In fact, since male flowers are considered useless, and even spoiling the non-fecundated female cones used for most beers, the European Union has pronounced its death sentence by eradication. Since Britain uses hop male flowers for a number of typical ales, she protested and succeeded in rescuing her hop male plants from hop-cide.
BTW in spring, in my region, Veneto, both male and female wild hop flowers are gathered to be used in a number of typical recipes. In this season it is not uncommon to see people looking for "bruscandoli" as wild hop is called here, to eat alone (like asparaguses), in omelets or risotto.
