Description

Hi there. This little guy I found in our garden on the Easter-Weekend. I know now who or what it is, but I like to ask you about any ideas ;-) He or she is about 18-20mm tall (or small *g*) and has a long "needle" on the head. Like some kind of unicorn. They hover in the air like hummingbirds. Please zoom for some details - the next days I will show some more shots and will give you the solution about the species ...

From the Systoechus family? Not a biologist by any means, but googling "needle nose fly" brought up identical specimens. Nice shot down low- thats a good angle! Nice depth of field too. Tsk, Tsk... Looks like your still using the camera in auto mode though. ;)

Andrea. Great guess. That's right. They are very nervous and I was robbing around on my belly through the lawn to get some close-up's. I think I shot one laying his eggs on the ground - shown on one of the next shots.
