Description

FIRE ONE!.......FIRE TWO! Captured on film October 1989, at the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, California. Just one small part of my trip to that fair city way back when. Since Denise/MrsRatbag has been posting pics of boats from in and around her local marinas, at sea, and at the Ballard Locks, I thought I would upload some of the very few boat shots I've got. Unfortunately, most of the photos taken inside the sub didn't come out very well, so I'm not including them in this series. And, to avoid any misunderstanding, submarines are considered boats, or as the Germans would say, Unterseeboots (U-boats), and are not ships. USS Pampanito (SS-383), a Balao-class submarine, was a United States Navy boat, the only one named for a variety of the pompano fish (see gafftopsail pompano). She completed six war patrols from 1944 to 1945 and served as a Naval Reserve Training ship from 1960 to 1971. She is now a National Historic Landmark, preserved as a memorial and museum ship in the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association located at Fisherman's Wharf. She flies a broom from her mast, indicating a "clean sweep": a successful patrol that "swept the enemy from the seas." In total, she sank six Japanese ships and damaged four others, with a total of more than 27,000 tons of enemy shipping sunk. Source: Wikipedia encylopedia. Bet you thought I was just all about cars, balloons and airplanes, right? Thankx for clicking on, and have a holistic hump day.

Some serious weaponry on that sub! It's a great series of shots, Harry, although as usual with this kind of thing I don't have anything intelligent to say about the subject itself. But I know for a fact that I could go to sea on one of these babies; I got frighteningly claustrophobic on the sub ride at Disneyland, even though I knew for a fact that the only complete underwater part of the ride was when they passed under the waterfall! I guess phobias don't have to be reasonable by definition...

I too was on the Bowfin, so this brings back some memories - I'll have to dig some of those photos out one day.

I went through the German U-505 in Chicago back in the '80s. Captured for its enigma machine and code books, the commander of the task force salvaged the boat apparently not realizing that if the Germans discovered that the boat had not been sunk they would change the codes. The sub and crew were held incognito. It was a small cramped sub with no luxuries compared to our Fleet boats. Due to deteriorating conditions it was brought inside the museum. Do a Google on U-505 for more info.

Well, Harry, considering your love of planes, I'm not at all surprised that this would be of interest to you. :) We saw the battleship "USS Alabama" and its submarine in Mobile, Alabama years ago, so this lovely collage of images brings back fond memories. Very nicely done!
