Description
Cover art for YA fantasy novel, Beyond the Wizard's Threshold by Lou Silverwood from Lilley Press.
The door is the main symbolic image in the novel, and to make it looming and threatening I chose a low wide angle camera to emphasize the perspective distortion. Not something I'd normally do. Plus, I tried to get the POV of a 13 year old boy and girl looking up at the door from the porch bottom.
The texture for the door was complex, to say the least. Plus it had to include certain symbolic elements the author desired. The rest is all mine. Mostly gobbledygook to be honest. None of the runes mean anything aside from the alchemical symbols. And yes, I had to sneak Kokopeli in there.
The weird woods are a result of the author describing the house as being a bit ramshackle and put together of bits and pieces. And yes, the cedar sill is supposed to be new and clean. I made some weird porch railing posts for the foreground and they give it this weird almost nautical feel that I think adds a sense of displacement to the image.
Lighting isn't what I would normally do. I prefer darker. But the author wanted a sense of sunlight coming in from the side, making the door glow. I didn't quite get a glowing door, but it lit it well.

Interesting mixture of symbols indeed - did the author specify the mix of Celtic, Medival, Victorian, and Southwestern American symbols, or did you come up with that? The various textures of the woods are beautiful!
