Description

It's back!!!! Captured 4/4/09, at the semibeautiful Chino Planes of Fame Museum in the semibeautiful Chino Airport in semibeautiful Chino, California. The Lockheed P-38 Lightning is such a popular feature at air museums that this one had a separate fuselage all set up for a real closeup viewing of the weapons array, plus the cockpit controls and instrument panel, which I'll post later on. Note the admirers around the fuselage. A ZOOM would really aid and abet your viewing capability. The three bottom shots show the weapons array, with the four machine guns forming an arc on top and the single cannon all by itself at the bottom. For the very curious: The weapons are one Hispano M2(C) 20mm cannon with 150 rounds (2 AP, 2 tracer and 2 HE ammo belt composition) and four Browning MG53-2 0.50 in (12.7mm) machine guns with 500 rpg. The rate of fire was about 650 rounds per minute for the 20mm cannon round (130 g shell) at a muzzle velocity of about 2887 ft/s, and for the .50in. machine guns, about 850 rpm at 2,756 ft/s velocity. Combined rate of fire was over 4,000 rpm with roughly every sixth projectile a 20mm. Time of firing for the 20mm cannon and .50 caliber machine guns were approximately 14 seconds and 35 seconds respectively. Source: Wikipedia encyclopedia The fellow shown sitting and leaning up against the hanger in the bottom photo was in the process of applying sun screen to his bod. Not that it matters that much at this juncture. A Stearman biplane is in front of him. Thankx for the peek, and have a supreme Saturday.

Hey, my kind of plane--no wings means it stays on the ground! But those little wheels won't go very fast :( And look at all those curling irons stuck into the nose, isn't that thoughtful of them? LOL! Sorry, Harry, all I can do is goof in my own way here...although your shots are excellent!

A most unique set of shots, Harry. Never knew they could display a fuselage like that. Very interesting, and quite some firepower there! Cool collage, Harry, well done.
