Description

Captured 4/30/09, around 7:50 AM, about .55 miles/.885 kilometers from my decadent dwelling. When I posted this same picket fence (#5) on April 24, I mentioned that I was showing it from virtually all POVs, and believed I hadn't missed an angle, except for looking directly down from the sky. But, in her comments, Denise said, "Yes, you did cover almost all the bases; what about lying down on the sidewalk and shooting up, though?" She said she was just kidding (I wonder about that), but who am I to pass up a challenge? If I've braved standing out on the street in the center lane between busy traffic, or standing on top of a table looking down a flight of stairs from the second floor just to click off some photos, then lying down on my stomach in alien territory to snap a few shots should be duck soup. Anything for a capture, right? But this wasn't as easy as it sounds. In order to achieve the proper light and shadow effects, I had to wait out several days of early morning overcast until the weather finally cleared up to give me good unimpeded sunshine. Then there was the added nuisance of soiled clothes, plus the inability to get up off the ground after the shoot because of my agonizing arthritis. Seeing me lying prone on the ground, passersby asked if I was okay, and whether they should call the paramedics. I almost said yes. But, pain be damned, I was able to get up, albeit section by section, all by my lonesome. Thankx for the visit, and have a monumental Monday.

Neat shots Harry. You need one of those cameras with the swivel LCD...allows you to put the camera on the ground and shoot up without you going down with it. I don't have one either but I've got plans:)

Oh Harry,I'm touched that you went to these lengths for me! I was only joking, you know...but these are amazing shots from the ant's eye view, they make the fence look so TALL! You're braver than me, I'm too afraid if I get down there I'll be stuck. So kudos to you, my friend, you're more of an explorer than I am! Excellent work!

lol...I can imagine you kneeling on a ground to get the angle right, been there done that too, more fun get up somehow and try to be invisable to ppl passing by with That look on their face...lol. Worth the effort because the pictures are unique for sure. Good job Harry.

I remember when you posted this, and I thought: You went to all ends to get these shots, and what better person to do them for, too! Again I love how you get these things head-on, yet you capture the irregularities and bends and out-of-line layout of the slats. They're bold shots but complicated. And they all sweep; and the bottom one has that wonderful angle, where the telephone pole seems to be bending in on the piece. I love these kinds of shots, and bravo for lying on the ground; because, besides how it feels on your body (hey, I'm 60 and I can't do that either), I'm sure the passersby wondered "what the _____!" Another fav for me. Ok: I hope this link works. I always show this to photographers who just climbed a tree to get a "good angle". This is a famous shot of the great photo-journalist, James Nachtwey, in war. I'm not giving it to you to make you feel bad that you didn't go 'that far' (your service to this country went way beyond anything a journalist could give), but just to make you feel at home, that yes, you photographers are out of your bleeding minds. Say hello to a fellow crazy-person...here
