Description

There are names for each of the stars Cregier can see from here. There are names that haunt him at the onset of night, when Thegan’s Orb settles below the horizon. Here, on Thegan Secundus, the only names of importance are those of the streets he has taken to wandering by night—when the play of moods and brooding ennui rob him of the ability to sleep. He wanders by day, as well: most commonly along the linear stretch of M Street—past the ramshackle of pawn shops and cheap eat-&-sleeps, past street hustlers of indeterminate gender, their smart tattoos advertising various carnal specialties. He knows most, but others are positively alien in their obscurity. Now, on the sand-rimmed lip of the Crescent Sea, he wanders without purpose or destination, heedless of the prefab towers that shelter the city's rich and give them views of water and air and the distant speck of the spaceport Island. Now, on the sand-rimmed lip of the Crescent Sea, he hears the echo of Melena’s voice on the wind. You’re a fool, Cregier. You’re a coward. Sand crunches beneath his planet-lubber’s shoes. A gift from Melena. Proof, he thinks, that she hopes to erase his spacer’s past. Proof, he thinks, that she wishes to hold him here in denial of the fact that he will leave. Soon. Tomorrow if he could. Or the tomorrow after that. Tomorrow… …Soon enough. But now, he walks along the sand-rimmed lip of the Crescent Sea, listening to the echo of Melena’s voice on the wind, and to the sound of sand crunching underfoot. ***** Cregier keeps popping up, but I'm not complaining about that. I'm sure he'll probably wind up with a full story at some point, but that depends on a lot of different factors that have yet to come into play. As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting.

I'm really starting to groove on this Cregier character. I think he deserves a novel rather than a story, I think I can see him heading somewhere epic. As for the photo, it's very nice work, but I don't really remember seeing two moons over the beach at Granville Avenue. Cool, manipulated shot.

The composition of the image, the size and positioning of the moons in relationship to the buildings, is wonderful. I love your character. I think his fascination with Melena, which has kept him planet-side for longer than normal, has run its course. Will he be shanghai'd by someone needing his expertise? Will he jump the first transport ship he sees, one fine day? Will Melena be killed, freeing him from what's left of his obsession? Will he be summoned by one of the powerful of Thegan Secundus and be asked to investigate the activities of a race called the Avaat? Cregier's future is uncertain, but sure to be filled with wonderful and astonishing twists of fate.

You did an amazing job with the photo manipulation here. The two moons appear so natural to the scene I almost didn't notice them. Cregier seems like a conflicted individual, something keeps on this planet yet he is constantly intending to leave. Perhaps something is waiting for him out there should he leave something he fears to face. And this place, in spite of its gloominess, is his only safety. Or not. But wonderful imaginings.

for people who say there isn't any poetry in chicago, you stand as proof to the contrary. I too love this Creiger character, and wonder where he's gonna wind up...and I love how you took a grayish scene at the Granville beach and turned it into a musing on the inner journey of life. Love the tilt you got to the buildings, and the quiet but intense light of some of the first floor dwellings; and the sepia-violet tint to the whole, as well as the generous expanse of beach that sweeps right up to us. And as for the 2 moons? I saw them several times. (Well with the inner eye...) I try to tell people that there are lots of mysteries in this practical city (born of industry, industry, industry): They just don't pop out at you. We need poets to find them (ie, you). If you had a separate life and all the money you needed, you could become Chicago's poet for a while. Evocative & beautiful shot, and chicago-like even if it doesn't have 2 moons...
