Description

First title: Drying Feathers. Second title: Bird Sun Bath. See Morningglory's comment below. This Blue Jay, which didn't appear wet, suddenly landed and spread out all his feathers as seen here. He stayed this way in the bright, warm sun for 2-3 minutes and then turned and began to preen himself. As Morningglory says below, this is the way that a bird gets rid of mites. The entire operation took three to four minutes in the bright sun on my deck floor. The deck is a pretty safe place since it is a good eight feet above the ground. ZOOM for details. Thanks for any and all comments, Bill:)

Nice pic. Actually this is a bird sun bath, nothing to do with being wet at all. Exposes the mites on the bird to the heat....after this ritual they can usually be seen cleaning themselves quite throughly with their beak.

Ultra stellar sharp clarity, colors, lighting and textural effects in this remarkable composition, Bill! Love the pleated repetition of the feathers in the wing and tail.
