It's now almost the same height as myself and looks like it is going to flower soon. I'm out there first thing every morning to see if it opened. I still haven't a clue what it is but it looks like it would kill in order to defend itself.

Nice close-up. H'mm, no idea what it is either, but those fuzzy bracts around the blossom should give it away. Strange to see a 6 foot 4 inch plant not bloom yet.
