Description

It flowered overnight and now is wilting in the sunlight. Each bloom is a little over an inch wide, 2.5cms. No smell. It's growing like mad. But what is it? I think Durleybeachbum was on the right track. I'll have to go back to see her suggestion.

This looks like our mullein (sp) - they grow wild here and are several feet tall and thin. The flowers will surround the top section of the stem. Nice following to this plant.

I think it's a Common Mullein (Verbascum Thapus). Crikey, it's not gong to stay in the garden, each plant can produce upto 180,000 seeds and it can grow ten feet tall. It has many medicinal properties including asthma and ear infections.

I will call them Triffids from now on. That was a good book.

It is a type of evening primrose. biennial - produces a low growing rosette of leaves the first year then sending up a tall spike of flowers the second year.
