Description

Monday is Memorial Day here in the States when we remember our servicemen and women, especially the ones who are gone. Here's a salute to my Dad and all the other veterans past and present, particularly the ones who gave all. This is his "Eisenhower Jacket" from WWII. Dad landed with the First Army/29th Div. on Omaha Beach on D-Day and then served in the 9th Air Force. He said he wasn't a hero, but just did his job.

I know that veterans often say they aren't heros but rest of us know better. Thank you to father and all those who serve. In Cananda we remember at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month all those who served in both wars that we may be free.

To you and Cole4965: excellent comments. Too many people do not know what they enjoy, what others do not have in their countries that we do. Unless you've been in a war zone, an occupied country or visited a "less free" country, the concept of Liberty is abstract and jingoistic. What a shame. A salute to all those who have served. (My dad was at Pearl.)

I've said it once, I'll say it again. Freedom is not truly free, no matter were in the world you live, someone gave their all for that privilege. This is a wonderful tribute. Nicely done.

Definitely a hero, I've noticed that most from that war shrugged it off as just doing their job. And fewer yet ever really talked about what they saw, or felt while there. I regret that a lot of the following generations don't understand the sacrifices made, or why. Freedom here is becoming to be expected, a right to have, without people understanding that there was and is a price to pay. I am grateful for your father and his efforts, along with all of our veterans and servicemen. Thank you!!!!!

Roger.... Any man who fought during any war and THEN says 'I wasn't a hero......' Is a Hero! That IS the true mark of a Hero... Respect to him and ALL who did the same , where ever that may have been. Great picture, my friend. Rob.

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments about Dad and our veterans. I'm sure many of your dads, or perhaps you, fall into the same category. All the vets and servicemen and women deserve the best!

Beautiful dedication ... In my eyes anyone that "just did his job" back then and in all the conflicts through out the world is more than a Hero.... Excellent Shot!!

Depending on the point of view that is exactly what makes a hero - being where one is supposed to be. Hats off to your dad and his fellow soldiers being brave. I salute him too. I would have liked to know what the colored bar signifies.

Piet: To answer your question the ribbons represent his four medals from left to right: Red and white = Good Conduct; Brown, white and green= North African, Mediterranean, and European Theatres of Operation with bronze arrowhead for D-Day and combat star for Normandy; Blue, yellow and red = World War II Victory; and White, black and red = Army of Occupation - Germany.
